Head to the Mountains!
Although Charlotte, North Carolina is located about 2 hours from the Appalachian Mountains, the city has one attraction offering a very unique virtual mountain experience.
The US Whitewater Center contains a humanly-constructed recirculating river affording visitor opportunities for enthusiasts as well first-timers seeking instruction in such activities as various styles of rafting and kayaking. The center also offers rock climbing as well as ziplining and repelling activities.
For those who enjoy hiking and walking through the woods, there are 14 miles of trails that range from easy (flat walking) to advanced trails with steep inclines and higher elevations attractive not only to hikers but to mountain bikers as well. Included in the hiking adventures is an eco-trekking area in which participants are given a GPS locator for the purpose of finding checkpoints and following learning clues about wildlife and vegetation along the Catawba River.
For a relaxing change from hiking, whitewater rafting and kayaking, head for the NASCAR Hall of Fame museum. This museum offers exhibits and historical accounts of one of the most popular sports of all time. Interactive exhibit areas afford visitors the chance to be a pit crew member or take a simulated race around the track.
